National Dental Association
An article about the National Dental Association
The National Dental Association (NDA) is a professional association of minority dentists in the United States. It was established to promote oral health equity among people of color by harnessing the collective power of its members, advocating for the needs of underserved communities, and promoting the highest standards of oral health care.
History[edit]
The National Dental Association was founded in 1913 as the Tri-State Dental Association by a group of African American dentists who were excluded from other professional dental organizations due to racial discrimination. In 1932, the organization was renamed the National Dental Association to reflect its growing membership and national scope.
Mission and Goals[edit]
The mission of the NDA is to represent the concerns of minority dentists and to eliminate oral health disparities among minority populations. The association aims to:
- Promote oral health equity
- Advocate for policies that improve access to dental care
- Support the professional development of minority dentists
- Foster a diverse and inclusive dental workforce
Programs and Initiatives[edit]
The NDA offers a variety of programs and initiatives designed to support its mission, including:
Continuing Education[edit]
The NDA provides continuing education opportunities for its members to ensure they remain at the forefront of dental practice and technology. These programs include workshops, seminars, and an annual convention.
Community Outreach[edit]
The association is involved in numerous community outreach programs aimed at improving oral health literacy and access to care in underserved communities. These programs often involve partnerships with local health organizations and schools.
Advocacy[edit]
The NDA actively advocates for policies that address oral health disparities and improve access to dental care for minority populations. This includes lobbying for increased funding for dental health programs and supporting legislation that promotes diversity in the dental profession.
Membership[edit]
Membership in the NDA is open to dentists, dental students, and dental hygienists who support the association's mission. The NDA also has affiliate chapters across the United States that provide local support and networking opportunities for members.
