ASM-DT amphibious rifle
Soviet amphibious assault rifle
The ASM-DT amphibious rifle is a specialized firearm developed in the Soviet Union for use by naval and special forces. It is designed to operate both underwater and on land, providing versatility in various combat environments.
Design and Development
The ASM-DT was developed in the late 20th century to address the need for a weapon that could function effectively in both aquatic and terrestrial settings. The rifle is based on the APS underwater rifle, which was limited to underwater use, and the AK-74, a standard infantry rifle.
The design incorporates features from both rifles, allowing it to switch between firing underwater and above water. This capability is achieved through a unique barrel and ammunition system that accommodates different types of projectiles.
Features
The ASM-DT is equipped with a dual-barrel system that allows it to fire specially designed underwater ammunition as well as standard 5.45_39mm rounds used by the AK-74. The transition between the two modes is facilitated by a selector switch.
Underwater Ammunition
For underwater operations, the rifle uses 5.66_39mm MPS ammunition, which is designed to maintain stability and accuracy in a submerged environment. The projectiles are longer and heavier than standard bullets, allowing them to travel effectively through water.
Land Ammunition
On land, the ASM-DT can fire standard 5.45_39mm ammunition, making it compatible with the logistics of regular infantry units. This dual capability ensures that operators are not disadvantaged when transitioning between environments.
Operational Use
The ASM-DT is primarily used by Russian Naval Infantry and special forces units. Its ability to function in diverse environments makes it ideal for missions involving amphibious assaults, underwater sabotage, and reconnaissance.
Advantages and Limitations
The primary advantage of the ASM-DT is its versatility, allowing operators to engage targets both underwater and on land without needing to switch weapons. However, the complexity of its design and the need for specialized ammunition can be seen as limitations.
