ABC Family Worldwide is a company that operates a cable television network in the United States. It is known for its family-oriented programming and has undergone several name changes and ownership transitions throughout its history.
History
ABC Family Worldwide was originally founded as the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) Satellite Service in 1977 by televangelist Pat Robertson. The network was initially focused on religious programming.
In 1988, the network was renamed the Family Channel and began to include more general entertainment programming while still maintaining a family-friendly focus.
In 1997, the network was sold to Fox Kids Worldwide, a joint venture between News Corporation and Saban Entertainment, and was renamed Fox Family Channel.
In 2001, The Walt Disney Company acquired the network and rebranded it as ABC Family.
Programming
ABC Family Worldwide is known for its mix of original series, acquired series, and movies. The network has produced popular original series such as Pretty Little Liars, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and Switched at Birth.
The network also airs a variety of family-friendly movies and holiday specials, particularly during its annual "25 Days of Christmas" programming event.
Ownership
ABC Family Worldwide is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, one of the largest media conglomerates in the world. The network is part of Disney's Disney–ABC Television Group.
Rebranding
In 2016, ABC Family was rebranded as Freeform to better reflect its target audience of "becomers," or viewers in the 14-34 age demographic.
