Austin is the capital city of the U.S. state of Texas. It is the 11th-most populous city in the United States and the 4th-most populous city in Texas. Austin is known for its vibrant live-music scene centered around country music, blues, and rock. The city is also home to many parks and lakes that are popular for hiking, biking, swimming, and boating.

History

Austin was originally settled in the 1830s along the Colorado River. It was named after Stephen F. Austin, the "Father of Texas" and the republic's first secretary of state. The city was chosen as the capital of the Republic of Texas in 1839 and incorporated in December of that year.

Geography

Austin is located in Central Texas, along the Balcones Fault, and is situated on the Colorado River, with three man-made lakes within the city limits: Lady Bird Lake, Lake Austin, and Lake Walter E. Long. The city is characterized by its hilly terrain and numerous parks and green spaces.

Austin is also known for its food scene, particularly its barbecue and Tex-Mex cuisine.

Transportation

Austin is served by the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and has a network of highways and public transportation options, including buses and a commuter rail line. The city is also known for its bike-friendly infrastructure.

Austin is home to several professional sports teams, including Austin FC in Major League Soccer. The city also hosts the annual Formula 1 United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas.
