Ulcerate is a death metal band from Auckland, New Zealand, known for their complex and atmospheric style of music. Formed in 2000, the band has been influential in the extreme metal scene, particularly for their use of dissonance and unconventional song structures.

History

Ulcerate was formed in 2000 by guitarist Michael Hoggard, drummer Jamie Saint Merat, and bassist Mark Seeney. The band initially played a more traditional form of death metal but quickly evolved to incorporate more complex and atmospheric elements into their music. Their early work, including the demo The Coming of Genocide (2003), showcased their technical prowess and set the stage for their future releases.

In 2006, Ulcerate released their debut album, Of Fracture and Failure, which was well-received in the underground metal community. The album featured intricate guitar work and a focus on creating a dense, oppressive atmosphere.

The band's second album, Everything Is Fire (2009), marked a significant evolution in their sound. It was praised for its innovative approach to death metal, incorporating elements of post-metal and black metal. This release helped establish Ulcerate as a leading force in the genre.

Subsequent albums, including The Destroyers of All (2011) and Vermis (2013), continued to push the boundaries of extreme metal. Ulcerate's music is characterized by its use of complex rhythms, dissonant chords, and a focus on creating an immersive listening experience.

Musical Style

Ulcerate's music is often described as a blend of technical death metal and atmospheric post-metal. Their sound is marked by the use of dissonant guitar riffs, complex time signatures, and a focus on creating a dark, immersive atmosphere. The band's approach to songwriting is unconventional, often eschewing traditional verse-chorus structures in favor of more fluid, evolving compositions.

Drummer Jamie Saint Merat is noted for his technical proficiency and ability to create intricate, dynamic drum patterns that complement the band's complex guitar work. The band's lyrics often explore themes of existentialism, nihilism, and the human condition.
