Dell Rapids is a city in Minnehaha County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 3,633 at the 2020 census. Dell Rapids is known as "The Little City with the Big Attractions."

History[edit]

Dell Rapids was founded in 1871. The city was named for the dells and the rapids in the Big Sioux River.

. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.2 km²), all land.

Demographics[edit]

As of the 2020 census, there were 3,633 people, 1,400 households, and 1,000 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,816.5 inhabitants per square mile (701.4/km²).

Economy[edit]

Dell Rapids has a diverse economy with a mix of agriculture, manufacturing, and retail businesses. The city is home to several quarries that produce quartzite, a hard rock used in construction.

Education[edit]

The city is served by the Dell Rapids School District, which includes Dell Rapids Elementary, Dell Rapids Middle School, and Dell Rapids High School.

Notable People[edit]

  • Hubert H. Humphrey, 38th Vice President of the United States, was born in Wallace, South Dakota, but spent part of his childhood in Dell Rapids.
