Richmond County is a county located in the east-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was approximately 206,000. The county seat is Augusta, which is also the principal city of the Augusta metropolitan area.
History[edit]
Richmond County was established on February 5, 1777, as one of the original counties of Georgia. It was named after Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond, a British politician who was sympathetic to the American colonies' cause during the American Revolution.
Geography[edit]
Richmond County is located in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) and is bordered by the Savannah River to the northeast. The county has a total area of 329 square miles, of which 324 square miles is land and 5.2 square miles is water.
