Richmond County is a county located in the east-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 206,607. The county seat is Augusta, which is also the largest city in the county. Richmond County is part of the Augusta-Richmond County consolidated city-county government.
History
Richmond County was established on February 5, 1777, as one of the original counties of Georgia. It was named in honor of Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond, a British politician who was sympathetic to the American colonies' cause during the American Revolution.
The county has a rich history, particularly during the American Civil War, when Augusta served as a significant supply depot for the Confederate States of America. The Augusta Canal, constructed in 1845, played a crucial role in the industrial development of the area.
Geography
Richmond County covers a total area of 329 square miles, of which 324 square miles is land and 5 square miles is water. The county is located in the Piedmont region of Georgia, characterized by rolling hills and a mix of urban and rural areas.
The Savannah River forms the eastern border of the county, separating it from South Carolina. The river is a vital waterway for commerce and recreation.
