Jan Egeland
Jan Egeland (born 12 September 1957) is a prominent Norwegian diplomat, political scientist, and humanitarian leader. He is widely recognized for his extensive work in international diplomacy and humanitarian efforts, particularly during his tenure as the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator from 2003 to 2006.

Jan Egeland was born in Stavanger, Norway. He pursued his higher education at the University of Oslo, where he studied political science. Egeland furthered his education at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C., where he specialized in international relations.
Career
Early Career
Egeland began his career in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he held various positions. He was involved in peace negotiations and conflict resolution efforts, particularly in the Middle East and Central America.
United Nations
In 2003, Egeland was appointed as the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in coordinating international responses to humanitarian crises, including the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami and the Darfur conflict.
Egeland was known for his outspoken advocacy for increased humanitarian aid and his efforts to bring attention to "forgotten crises" around the world.
