DHIS2

DHIS2, or the District Health Information Software 2, is an open-source, web-based health management data platform. It is widely used for the collection, validation, analysis, and presentation of aggregate and patient-based statistical data, tailored to integrated health information management activities. DHIS2 is developed by the Health Information Systems Programme (HISP) at the University of Oslo and is used in over 70 countries worldwide.

Overview[edit]

DHIS2 is designed to support the management of health information systems, with a focus on improving health service delivery and outcomes. It is particularly popular in low- and middle-income countries due to its flexibility, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.

Key Features[edit]

  • Data Collection and Management: DHIS2 allows for the collection of data through various methods, including mobile devices, web-based forms, and offline data entry. It supports both aggregate data and individual records.
  • Data Analysis and Visualization: The platform provides tools for data analysis, including dashboards, charts, pivot tables, and maps. Users can create custom reports and visualizations to support decision-making.
  • Interoperability: DHIS2 is designed to integrate with other health information systems, supporting standards such as HL7, FHIR, and others to ensure seamless data exchange.
  • Customization and Extensibility: Users can customize DHIS2 to fit their specific needs, including the creation of custom data entry forms, indicators, and reports. The platform supports extensions through apps and plugins.
  • Security and Privacy: DHIS2 includes robust security features to protect sensitive health data, including user authentication, role-based access control, and data encryption.

Use Cases[edit]

DHIS2 is used in various health domains, including:

  • Epidemiological Surveillance: Tracking and monitoring disease outbreaks and health trends.
  • Maternal and Child Health: Managing data related to maternal health services, immunizations, and child health.
  • HIV/AIDS Programs: Monitoring and evaluating HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment programs.
  • Health Facility Management: Supporting the management of health facilities, including resource allocation and service delivery.

History[edit]

DHIS2 was first developed in the late 1990s as part of the Health Information Systems Programme (HISP) initiative. The software has evolved significantly over the years, with continuous improvements and updates driven by user feedback and technological advancements.

Technical Architecture[edit]

DHIS2 is built on a modular architecture, allowing for flexibility and scalability. It is developed using Java and runs on a variety of operating systems. The platform uses a relational database management system (RDBMS) for data storage, with PostgreSQL being the most commonly used database.

Implementation and Support[edit]

Implementing DHIS2 involves several steps, including needs assessment, system configuration, data migration, and user training. The University of Oslo and various partners provide support and training to ensure successful implementation and sustainable use of the platform.
