Alfonso García Robles (March 20, 1911 – September 2, 1991) was a distinguished Mexican diplomat and politician, renowned for his pivotal role in the establishment of the Treaty of Tlatelolco, which aimed to make Latin America a nuclear-weapon-free zone. His efforts in promoting nuclear disarmament earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1982, which he shared with Alva Myrdal.

Early Life and Education

Alfonso García Robles was born in Zamora, Michoacán, Mexico. He pursued his higher education at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he studied law. García Robles furthered his education in international law at the University of Paris and the Hague Academy of International Law.

Diplomatic Career

García Robles joined the Mexican Foreign Service in 1939. Over the years, he held various significant positions, including serving as the Mexican ambassador to Brazil and as a representative to the United Nations. His diplomatic career was marked by his commitment to peace and disarmament.

Treaty of Tlatelolco

The Treaty of Tlatelolco, formally known as the "Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean," was signed in 1967.
