Herschel V. Johnson was an American diplomat and politician who served in various capacities within the United States Department of State. He is best known for his role as the United States Ambassador to Brazil during the World War II era.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Herschel Vespasian Johnson was born on May 3, 1894, in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended the University of Georgia, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He later pursued further studies at the Harvard Law School, where he obtained his law degree.

Diplomatic Career[edit]

Johnson began his career in the United States Foreign Service in the early 1920s. Over the years, he held various positions, including assignments in Mexico, Canada, and several countries in Europe. His extensive experience in international relations eventually led to his appointment as the United States Ambassador to Brazil in 1941.

Ambassador to Brazil[edit]

During his tenure as Ambassador to Brazil, Johnson played a crucial role in strengthening the diplomatic ties between the United States and Brazil. His efforts were particularly significant during World War II, as Brazil became an important ally to the United States in the fight against the Axis Powers. Johnson's diplomatic skills were instrumental in securing Brazilian support for the Allied cause.

Later Life and Legacy[edit]

After his service in Brazil, Johnson continued to work in various capacities within the United States Department of State until his retirement. He passed away on April 16, 1966.
