Baltic is a city in Minnehaha County, in the state of South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,276 at the 2020 census.

History[edit]

Baltic was founded in 1881 as a stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The city was originally named St. Olaf, but it was renamed Baltic in 1884. The name Baltic was chosen to reflect the heritage of the many Scandinavian settlers in the area.

. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.99 square miles (2.56 km²), all land.

Demographics[edit]

As of the census of 2020, there were 1,276 people, 470 households, and 346 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,288.9 people per square mile (497.8/km²). There were 490 housing units at an average density of 495.0 per square mile (191.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.8% White, 0.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.3% Asian, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.

Education[edit]

Baltic is served by the Baltic School District, which includes Baltic Elementary School, Baltic Middle School, and Baltic High School. The school district provides education for students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

The economy of Baltic is primarily based on agriculture, with many residents engaged in farming and related activities. The city also has a number of small businesses and services that cater to the local community.
