Roberts County is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of South Dakota. Established in 1883, it was named after S.G. Roberts, a local politician. The county seat is Sisseton, which is also the largest city within the county.

Geography[edit]

Roberts County encompasses a total area of 1,125 square miles, of which 1,101 square miles is land and 24 square miles is water. The terrain is predominantly prairie with several lakes and rivers, contributing to its significant water area percentage. The county is bordered by North Dakota to the north, traversed by the Bois de Sioux River which also forms part of the state line.

Demographics[edit]

As of the 2020 census, the population of Roberts County was 10,394. The demographic composition has a significant percentage of Native Americans, primarily from the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate of the Lake Traverse Reservation, which is partly located within the county.

Economy[edit]

The economy of Roberts County is largely based on agriculture, including crops like corn and soybeans, and livestock. There is also some industrial activity related to food processing and manufacturing.

Roberts County is served by several school districts, including the Sisseton School District. Higher education opportunities are available in nearby cities and through tribal colleges located on the reservation.
