Muscle in the forearm that flexes the fingers

The flexor digitorum profundus muscle is a muscle in the forearm that flexes the fingers. It is one of the deep muscles of the anterior compartment of the forearm.

Structure

The flexor digitorum profundus muscle originates from the upper three-quarters of the anterior and medial surfaces of the body of the ulna, the interosseous membrane, and the deep fascia of the forearm. It inserts into the base of the distal phalanges of the fingers.

Innervation

The muscle is innervated by two nerves: the medial part by the ulnar nerve and the lateral part by the anterior interosseous branch of the median nerve.

Blood Supply

The blood supply to the flexor digitorum profundus muscle is provided by the anterior interosseous artery.

Function

The primary function of the flexor digitorum profundus muscle is the flexion of the distal phalanges of the fingers. It plays a crucial role in gripping and manipulating objects.

Antagonist

The antagonist of the flexor digitorum profundus muscle is the extensor digitorum muscle, which extends the fingers.
