Template:Infobox film industry Independent film (often referred to as indie film) is a feature film or short film that is produced outside the major film studio system, in addition to being produced and distributed by independent entertainment companies. Independent films are sometimes distinguishable by their content and style and the way in which the filmmakers' personal artistic vision is realized. Usually, but not always, independent films are made with considerably lower budgets than major studio films.

History

The history of independent film can be traced back to the early days of cinema. In the early 20th century, filmmakers such as D.W. Griffith and Charlie Chaplin broke away from the major studios to create their own films. The United Artists studio, founded in 1919 by Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and D.W.
