The Grand National Assembly of Turkey (GNAT) (Turkish: Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi ) is the unicameral legislature of Turkey. It was founded on 23 April 1920 during the Turkish War of Independence and has been the principal legislative body of the country since then.

History

The Grand National Assembly was established by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his colleagues as part of the efforts to resist the Treaty of Sèvres and to establish a new, independent Turkish state. The first meeting took place in Ankara, which later became the capital of the Republic of Turkey.

Structure and Function

The Grand National Assembly is composed of 600 members who are elected for a five-year term through a system of party-list proportional representation. The Assembly is responsible for enacting laws, approving the budget, and overseeing the executive branch.

Leadership

The Speaker of the Grand National Assembly is elected by the members of the Assembly and is responsible for presiding over its sessions. The current Speaker is Mustafa Şentop.

Committees

The Assembly operates through various committees that focus on specific areas such as foreign affairs, finance, and education.

Legislative Process

The legislative process in the Grand National Assembly involves several stages, including the proposal of bills, committee review, and general debate. Once a bill is approved by the Assembly, it is sent to the President of Turkey for ratification.

Elections

Elections for the Grand National Assembly are held every five years. The most recent election took place on 14 May 2023. The next election is scheduled for 2028.

Meeting Place

The Grand National Assembly meets in the Parliament Building located in Ankara, the capital of Turkey.
