South Carolina statistical areas
South Carolina is divided into several statistical areas as defined by the United States Office of Management and Budget (OMB). These areas are used for statistical purposes and include Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), Micropolitan Statistical Areas (μSAs), and Combined Statistical Areas (CSAs).
Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs)[edit]
Metropolitan Statistical Areas are regions with a high population density at their core and close economic ties throughout the area. In South Carolina, the primary MSAs include:
- Charleston-North Charleston, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area
- Columbia, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area
- Greenville-Anderson-Mauldin, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area
- Myrtle Beach-Conway-North Myrtle Beach, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area
- Spartanburg, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area
Micropolitan Statistical Areas (μSAs)[edit]
Micropolitan Statistical Areas are urban areas based around a core city or town with a population between 10,000 and 50,000. South Carolina's μSAs include:
- Greenwood, SC Micropolitan Statistical Area
- Seneca, SC Micropolitan Statistical Area
- Orangeburg, SC Micropolitan Statistical Area
Combined Statistical Areas (CSAs)[edit]
Combined Statistical Areas are composed of adjacent MSAs and μSAs that have significant economic ties. In South Carolina, the notable CSAs include:
- Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson, SC Combined Statistical Area
- Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville, SC Combined Statistical Area
