Gaelic handball

Gaelic handball is a traditional Irish sport played in a court where players use their hands to hit a small rubber ball against a wall. The game is similar to other handball codes such as American handball and Basque pelota.
History
Gaelic handball has ancient origins, with references to the game dating back to the 16th century. It is believed to have been played in various forms across Ireland for centuries. The modern version of the game was codified in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Rules
The game is played in a rectangular court with either one, three, or four walls. The objective is to score points by hitting the ball against the front wall in such a way that the opponent cannot return it before it bounces twice. Matches can be played in singles (one player per side) or doubles (two players per side).
Scoring
Points are scored when a player fails to return the ball before it bounces twice. The first player to reach a predetermined number of points, usually 21, wins the game. Matches are typically played in a best-of-three format.
Equipment
The primary equipment used in Gaelic handball includes:
- A small rubber ball
- Gloves to protect the hands
- Proper athletic attire
Court Dimensions
The standard court dimensions for Gaelic handball are:
- 40 feet long
- 20 feet wide
- 20 feet high (for four-wall courts)
Governing Body
The sport is governed by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), which also oversees other traditional Irish sports such as Gaelic football and hurling.
Competitions
Gaelic handball is played at various levels, from local club competitions to national championships. The All-Ireland Handball Championships are the most prestigious events in the sport, attracting top players from across the country.
