The President of Germany (Bundespräsident der Bundesrepublik Deutschland) is the head of state of Germany. The office was established with the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949. The President's primary role is largely ceremonial, but they also have important functions in the political system of Germany.
Election and Term
The President is elected by the Federal Convention, which is composed of members of the Bundestag and an equal number of delegates from the state parliaments. The term of office is five years, and a President may be re-elected once.
Duties and Powers
The President's duties include:
- Signing bills into law
- Appointing and dismissing federal judges, federal civil servants, and military officers
- Representing Germany in international law
- Proposing a candidate for Chancellor to the Bundestag
- Dissolving the Bundestag under certain circumstances
The President also has the power to grant pardons and to declare a state of emergency.
Residence
The official residence of the President is Schloss Bellevue in Berlin.
