The President's primary role is largely ceremonial, but they also have important functions in the political system of Germany.

The President's duties include:

  • Signing bills into law
  • Appointing and dismissing federal judges, federal civil servants, and military officers
  • Representing Germany in international law
  • Proposing a candidate for Chancellor to the Bundestag
  • Dissolving the Bundestag under certain circumstances

The President also has the power to grant pardons and to declare a state of emergency.
