Powell, Wyoming is a city in Park County, Wyoming, United States. It is located in the northwestern part of the state, near the Shoshone National Forest and the Yellowstone National Park. As of the 2020 census, the population of Powell was approximately 6,314.
History[edit]
Powell was established in the early 20th century as part of the Shoshone Project, a federal irrigation project aimed at transforming the arid lands of the Big Horn Basin into fertile agricultural areas. The city was named after John Wesley Powell, a geologist and explorer who led expeditions in the American West.
Geography[edit]
Powell is situated at an elevation of 4,393 feet (1,339 meters) above sea level. The city covers a total area of 4.25 square miles (11.01 km²), all of which is land. The Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River flows near the city, providing water resources for agriculture and recreation.
