The Vice President of India is the second-highest constitutional office in the Republic of India. The Vice President is also the ex officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India. The office was established by the Constitution of India in 1950.
Election[edit]
The Vice President is elected by an Electoral College consisting of members of both houses of Parliament, in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote. The election is conducted by the Election Commission of India.
Term and Tenure[edit]
The Vice President holds office for a term of five years from the date on which they enter upon their office. They can be re-elected any number of times. The Vice President may resign from office by submitting their resignation to the President of India. The Vice President can also be removed from office by a resolution of the Rajya Sabha passed by an absolute majority and agreed to by the Lok Sabha.
Powers and Functions[edit]
The primary function of the Vice President is to act as the ex officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. In this capacity, the Vice President presides over the sessions of the Rajya Sabha and ensures that the proceedings are conducted in an orderly manner. The Vice President also plays a crucial role in maintaining the decorum and discipline of the house.
In the event of the death, resignation, or removal of the President of India, the Vice President serves as the Acting President until a new President is elected. The Vice President does not have any legislative powers but can cast a vote in the Rajya Sabha in the case of a tie.
List of Vice Presidents[edit]
Since the establishment of the office, India has had several Vice Presidents. The first Vice President was Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who later became the President of India. The current Vice President is Jagdeep Dhankhar, who assumed office on 11 August 2022.
Residence[edit]
The official residence of the Vice President is the Vice President's House in New Delhi. It is located on Maulana Azad Road and serves as both the residence and office of the Vice President.
