The Prime Minister of Australia is the head of government of the Commonwealth of Australia. The Prime Minister leads the executive branch of the federal government and is the leader of the Cabinet. The office of Prime Minister is not mentioned in the Constitution of Australia, but exists through an unwritten convention based on the Westminster system of responsible government.

Appointment

The Prime Minister is appointed by the Governor-General, who is the representative of the monarch. The Governor-General appoints the leader of the political party or coalition that has the confidence of the House of Representatives.

Role and Responsibilities

The Prime Minister's responsibilities include:

• Leading the government and the Cabinet
• Representing Australia domestically and internationally
• Advising the Governor-General on the appointment of ministers
• Overseeing the implementation of government policies
• Managing the operations of the Australian Public Service

History

The office of Prime Minister was established on 1 January 1901, when Edmund Barton became the first Prime Minister following the federation of the Australian colonies. Since then, Australia has had numerous Prime Ministers, each contributing to the nation's development and governance.

Residence

The official residences of the Prime Minister are The Lodge in Canberra and Kirribilli House in Sydney. These residences are used for official functions and as private homes for the Prime Minister and their family.
