James Dean
American actor (1931–1955)
James Byron Dean (February 8, 1931 – September 30, 1955) was an American actor. He is regarded as a cultural icon of teenage disillusionment and social estrangement, as expressed in the title of his most celebrated film, Rebel Without a Cause (1955), in which he starred as troubled teenager Jim Stark. The other two roles that defined his stardom were loner Cal Trask in East of Eden (1955) and surly ranch hand Jett Rink in Giant (1956).
Early life[edit]
James Dean was born on February 8, 1931, in Marion, Indiana, to Winton Dean and Mildred Wilson. He moved to Santa Monica, California, with his family at a young age. After his mother's death, he was sent back to Fairmount, Indiana, to live with his aunt and uncle. Dean attended Fairmount High School and later enrolled at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he majored in drama.
Career[edit]
Dean's career began with television appearances and minor film roles. His breakthrough came with his role in East of Eden, directed by Elia Kazan. His performance earned him a posthumous Academy Award for Best Actor nomination, making him the first actor to receive a nomination posthumously.
Dean's next film, Rebel Without a Cause, solidified his status as a cultural icon. Directed by Nicholas Ray, the film explored the moral decay of American youth and the conflicts between teenagers and their parents. Dean's portrayal of Jim Stark resonated with the youth of the 1950s and continues to be influential.
His final film, Giant, directed by George Stevens, was released posthumously. Dean played Jett Rink, a role that earned him his second posthumous Academy Award for Best Actor nomination.
Death[edit]
James Dean died in a car accident on September 30, 1955, near Cholame, California, while driving his Porsche 550 Spyder. He was 24 years old. Dean's untimely death cemented his status as a legend and a symbol of youthful rebellion.
Legacy[edit]
James Dean's influence on popular culture is profound. He has been the subject of numerous books, films, and documentaries. His image and persona have been referenced in music, fashion, and art. Dean's acting style and his embodiment of teenage angst have inspired generations of actors and filmmakers.
