Stratford-upon-Avon is a market town in the Stratford-on-Avon District in Warwickshire, England. It is situated on the River Avon, 91 miles (146 km) northwest of London, 22 miles (35 km) southeast of Birmingham, and 8 miles (13 km) southwest of Warwick. The town is a popular tourist destination owing to its status as the birthplace of William Shakespeare, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language.
History[edit]
Stratford-upon-Avon was originally inhabited by the Anglo-Saxons and remained a small village until the late 12th century. In 1196, King John granted Stratford its town charter, transforming it into a market town. The town's strategic location on the River Avon facilitated trade and commerce, contributing to its growth and prosperity.
