Rare Ltd. is a British video game developer and a subsidiary of Xbox Game Studios. Founded in 1985 by Tim Stamper and Chris Stamper, Rare is known for its innovative and influential games across various platforms.

Rare was originally established as Ultimate Play the Game in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, before transitioning to Rare. The company initially focused on developing games for the ZX Spectrum and later moved to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Rare gained prominence in the 1990s with a series of successful titles for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and the Nintendo 64.

In 2002, Rare was acquired by Microsoft and became part of Xbox Game Studios. This acquisition allowed Rare to develop games for the Xbox and its successors.
