Strophanthus speciosus is a species of flowering plant in the family Apocynaceae. It is native to parts of Africa, including regions in South Africa, Eswatini, and Mozambique. This plant is known for its striking flowers and its use in traditional medicine.

Description[edit]

Strophanthus speciosus is a climbing shrub or liana that can grow up to 10 meters in length. The leaves are opposite, simple, and ovate to elliptic in shape, with a glossy green appearance. The flowers are large, showy, and typically have a yellow to orange corolla with long, twisted petals that are often red or purple at the base. The fruit is a pair of follicles containing numerous seeds with long, silky hairs.

Habitat[edit]

This species is commonly found in forest margins, woodlands, and riverine vegetation. It prefers well-drained soils and can often be seen climbing on other vegetation or structures.

Uses[edit]

Traditional Medicine[edit]

Strophanthus speciosus has been used in traditional African medicine for various purposes. The seeds contain potent cardiac glycosides, which have been used to treat heart conditions. However, due to their high toxicity, they must be used with caution.

Ornamental Use[edit]

Due to its attractive flowers, Strophanthus speciosus is also cultivated as an ornamental plant in gardens and landscapes.

Toxicity[edit]

All parts of Strophanthus speciosus are toxic if ingested. The seeds, in particular, contain compounds that can affect the heart and nervous system, leading to serious health issues or death if consumed in large quantities.

Conservation Status[edit]

The conservation status of Strophanthus speciosus has not been extensively studied, but habitat destruction and overharvesting for medicinal use could pose threats to its populations in the wild.
