Tooth and Co. was a major Australian brewing company that operated from the mid-19th century until the late 20th century. The company was founded by John Tooth and his brother-in-law Charles Newnham in Sydney, New South Wales.

History[edit]

Tooth and Co. was established in 1835 when John Tooth and Charles Newnham opened the Kent Brewery in Sydney. The brewery quickly became one of the largest and most successful in the colony. The company expanded its operations throughout Australia, acquiring several other breweries and diversifying its product range.

In the early 20th century, Tooth and Co. became a public company and continued to grow, becoming a dominant force in the Australian brewing industry. The company was known for its flagship beer brands, including Reschs, Kent Old Brown, and Tooth's KB Lager.

Operations[edit]

Tooth and Co. operated several breweries across Australia, with the Kent Brewery in Sydney being its primary production facility. The company also owned and operated a large number of hotels and pubs, which served as key distribution points for its products.

Decline and Acquisition[edit]

In the latter half of the 20th century, Tooth and Co. faced increasing competition from other breweries and changing consumer preferences. The company struggled to maintain its market share and profitability. In 1983, Tooth and Co. was acquired by Carlton & United Breweries, a subsidiary of Foster's Group. The acquisition marked the end of Tooth and Co. as an independent entity.

Legacy[edit]

Despite its decline, Tooth and Co. left a lasting legacy in the Australian brewing industry. Many of its brands, such as Reschs, continue to be popular among Australian beer drinkers. The company's historical significance is also recognized through various heritage listings and the preservation of its former brewery sites.
