Gandhi Jayanti is a national holiday in India celebrated on 2nd October to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule. It is one of the three national holidays of India, the other two being Republic Day and Independence Day.

Significance[edit]

Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated to honor the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi, who is also known as the "Father of the Nation." His philosophy of nonviolence (ahimsa) and his role in the Indian freedom struggle have left a lasting impact on the world. The day is observed with various activities such as prayer services, commemorative ceremonies, and cultural events across the country.

Celebrations[edit]

The celebrations of Gandhi Jayanti include:

  • Prayer meetings and tributes at Raj Ghat, the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi.
  • Cultural events and activities in schools and colleges.
  • Speeches and discussions on Gandhi's life and his principles of truth and nonviolence.
  • Art exhibitions and essay competitions focusing on Gandhi's life and work.

International Observance[edit]

In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2nd October as the International Day of Non-Violence, recognizing Gandhi's role in promoting peace and nonviolence worldwide.
