The West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that causes West Nile fever in humans and other animals. Since its discovery in the West Nile district of Uganda in 1937, the virus has caused numerous outbreaks around the world. Uganda[edit]

The first recorded outbreak of West Nile virus occurred in 1937 in the West Nile district of Uganda. This initial outbreak led to the identification of the virus.

In 1974, South Africa experienced a significant outbreak of West Nile virus, which resulted in numerous cases of West Nile fever.
