Haliotis sorenseni, commonly known as the white abalone, is a species of gastropod in the family Haliotidae. This marine mollusk is native to the coastal waters of California and Baja California. It is one of the several species of abalone that are found in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Description[edit]

The shell of Haliotis sorenseni is relatively small compared to other abalone species, typically reaching a maximum length of about 20 centimeters. The shell is oval and flattened, with a series of respiratory pores along one side. The exterior of the shell is usually a pale white or cream color, which gives the species its common name. The interior of the shell is iridescent, displaying a range of colors from blue to green to pink.

Habitat[edit]

Haliotis sorenseni is found in rocky reef habitats at depths ranging from 20 to 60 meters. These abalones prefer areas with abundant kelp, which provides both food and shelter. They are typically found clinging to rocks or hiding in crevices to avoid predators.

Diet[edit]

The diet of Haliotis sorenseni consists primarily of macroalgae, particularly kelp. They use their radula, a specialized feeding organ, to scrape algae off rocks and other surfaces.

Reproduction[edit]

Haliotis sorenseni has a broadcast spawning reproductive strategy, where males and females release their gametes into the water column simultaneously. Fertilization occurs externally, and the resulting larvae are planktonic, eventually settling to the seafloor to develop into juvenile abalones.

Conservation Status[edit]

Haliotis sorenseni is listed as a critically endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Overfishing, habitat destruction, and disease have all contributed to the decline of this species. Conservation efforts are underway to protect and restore populations of Haliotis sorenseni through measures such as captive breeding and habitat restoration.
