Notrim

Notrim (Hebrew: נוטרים) were Jewish auxiliary police units established during the British Mandate of Palestine. The term "Notrim" translates to "guards" or "watchmen" in Hebrew. These units played a significant role in the security and defense of the Jewish community during a period of increasing tension and conflict in the region.
History[edit]
The Notrim were formed in the early 1930s in response to the growing violence and unrest between Jewish and Arab communities. The British authorities, who governed Palestine under the League of Nations mandate, authorized the creation of these units to help maintain order and protect Jewish settlements.
Organization and Structure[edit]
The Notrim were organized into various units, including the Jewish Settlement Police (JSP), the Special Night Squads (SNS), and the Supernumerary Police. These units were often composed of local Jewish volunteers who were familiar with the terrain and the local population.
Jewish Settlement Police[edit]
The Jewish Settlement Police was one of the primary components of the Notrim. It was responsible for the security of Jewish agricultural settlements and kibbutzim. Members of the JSP were trained in basic policing and defense tactics.
Special Night Squads[edit]
The Special Night Squads were elite units established by the British officer Orde Wingate. These squads conducted night-time operations against Arab insurgents and were known for their effectiveness and unconventional tactics.
Supernumerary Police[edit]
The Supernumerary Police were part-time auxiliary police officers who supported the regular police force. They were often called upon during emergencies or periods of heightened tension.
Role in the 1936-1939 Arab Revolt[edit]
During the 1936-1939 Arab Revolt, the Notrim played a crucial role in defending Jewish communities and infrastructure. They conducted patrols, guarded settlements, and participated in counter-insurgency operations alongside British forces.
Legacy[edit]
The experience and training gained by members of the Notrim were instrumental in the formation of the Haganah, the main Jewish paramilitary organization, and later the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Many former Notrim members went on to hold significant positions within these organizations.
