Harrisburg is a city in and the county seat of Saline County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,946 at the 2020 census. Harrisburg is located in the southeastern part of the state, near the Shawnee National Forest.
History[edit]
Harrisburg was founded in 1853 and named after James Alexander Harris, a prominent local settler. The city grew rapidly due to its location along the Ohio River and its role as a transportation hub. The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century further spurred growth and development.
Geography[edit]
Harrisburg is situated at coordinates 37°44′N 88°32′W. The city covers a total area of 6.4 square miles, of which 6.3 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water. The city is located near the Saline River and is part of the Illinois Basin.
