Shu Uemura (植村 秀, June 19, 1928 – December 29, 2007) was a renowned Japanese makeup artist and entrepreneur. He is the founder of the cosmetics brand Shu Uemura, which is known for its high-quality products and innovative approach to beauty.

Early Life[edit]

Shu Uemura was born in Tokyo, Japan. From a young age, he showed an interest in the arts and beauty. He attended the Tokyo Beauty Academy, where he was the only male student. His career in makeup artistry began in the 1950s when he moved to Hollywood to work in the film industry.

Uemura's big break came when he was asked to substitute for a famous makeup artist on the set of the film My Geisha. His work was highly praised, and he quickly gained a reputation in Hollywood. He worked with many famous actresses, including Shirley MacLaine and Frank Sinatra.

Return to Japan[edit]

In 1965, Uemura returned to Japan and founded his own makeup school. He also launched his first product, a cleansing oil, which became a bestseller. This product laid the foundation for his cosmetics brand, Shu Uemura, which he officially established in 1967.

Shu Uemura's brand became known for its artistic approach to makeup. The brand's philosophy was to enhance natural beauty through the use of high-quality products. Uemura was also known for his innovative packaging and collaborations with artists and designers.
