Peter O'Toole

Peter O'Toole (2 August 1932 – 14 December 2013) was an Irish actor. He is regarded as one of the most accomplished actors of his generation. O'Toole achieved international fame for his role as T. E. Lawrence in the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia, for which he received his first Academy Award nomination.

Early Life[edit]

Peter Seamus O'Toole was born on 2 August 1932, in Connemara, County Galway, Ireland. His father, Patrick Joseph O'Toole, was an Irish bookmaker, and his mother, Constance Jane Eliot, was a Scottish nurse. O'Toole was raised in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, where he attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).

Career[edit]

O'Toole began his career in the theatre, performing with the Bristol Old Vic and the Royal Shakespeare Company. His breakthrough role came in 1962 when he was cast as T. E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia. The film was a critical and commercial success, and O'Toole's performance is widely regarded as one of the greatest in the history of cinema.

Throughout his career, O'Toole received eight Academy Award nominations for Best Actor, making him the most-nominated actor never to win the award in competitive categories. His other notable films include Becket (1964), The Lion in Winter (1968), Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1969), The Ruling Class (1972), The Stunt Man (1980), and My Favorite Year (1982).

Personal Life[edit]

O'Toole was married to Welsh actress Siân Phillips from 1959 to 1979. The couple had two daughters, Kate and Patricia. He also had a son, Lorcan, with his girlfriend, model Karen Brown. O'Toole was known for his charismatic personality and his love of the theatre and literature.

Later Years and Death[edit]

In his later years, O'Toole continued to act in both film and television. He announced his retirement from acting in 2012. Peter O'Toole passed away on 14 December 2013, at the age of 81, in London, England.
