Jerry Lewis (born Joseph Levitch; March 16, 1926 – August 20, 2017) was an American comedian, actor, singer, filmmaker, and humanitarian. He was known for his slapstick humor in film, television, stage, and radio. He was also known for his partnership with Dean Martin as the groundbreaking comedy team Martin and Lewis.

Early life

Jerry Lewis was born Joseph Levitch on March 16, 1926, in Newark, New Jersey, to a family of Russian Jewish descent. His parents were entertainers, and he began performing at an early age. By the age of 15, he had developed his "Record Act," in which he mimed lyrics to songs while a phonograph played offstage.

Career

Martin and Lewis

In 1946, Lewis teamed up with Dean Martin to form the comedy duo Martin and Lewis. They quickly rose to national prominence, performing in nightclubs, on radio, and in films. Their partnership lasted ten years, ending in 1956.

Solo career

After the split with Martin, Lewis went on to have a successful solo career. He starred in, wrote, and directed many films, including The Nutty Professor (1963), which is considered one of his best works. He also hosted the annual MDA Labor Day Telethon for over 40 years, raising millions of dollars for muscular dystrophy research.

Later years

In his later years, Lewis continued to perform and make appearances. He received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to entertainment and humanitarian efforts. He passed away on August 20, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Personal life

Lewis was married twice and had seven children, including Gary Lewis, who became a successful musician. He was known for his charitable work, particularly with the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
