Joseph Michael Straczynski (born July 17, 1954) is an American television writer, screenwriter, producer, and comic book writer. He is best known as the creator of the science fiction television series Babylon 5 (1993–1998), for which he wrote 92 of the 110 episodes, as well as the spin-off series Crusade (1999).

Early Life

Straczynski was born in Paterson, New Jersey. He attended San Diego State University, where he earned a degree in psychology and sociology. During his time at university, he began writing plays and articles for the student newspaper, which sparked his interest in writing for television and film.

Career

Television

Straczynski's early work in television included writing for animated series such as He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, She-Ra: Princess of Power, and The Real Ghostbusters. He later moved on to live-action series, contributing to shows like Murder, She Wrote and The Twilight Zone.

In 1993, Straczynski created Babylon 5, a groundbreaking science fiction series known for its complex story arcs and character development. The show received critical acclaim and won several awards, including two Hugo Awards.

Film

Straczynski has also worked as a screenwriter for films. Notable works include Changeling (2008), directed by Clint Eastwood, and Thor (2011), for which he co-wrote the story.
