Omphalotus japonicus is a species of mushroom in the genus Omphalotus. It is commonly known as the Japanese jack-o'-lantern mushroom. This species is native to Japan and is known for its bioluminescent properties.

Description[edit]

Omphalotus japonicus is a medium-sized mushroom with a distinctive orange to yellow cap. The gills underneath the cap emit a greenish glow in the dark, a phenomenon known as bioluminescence. The stem is typically cylindrical and can reach heights of up to 10 centimeters.

Distribution and Habitat[edit]

This species is primarily found in Japan, where it grows in forests, particularly in areas with decaying wood. Omphalotus japonicus is a saprotrophic fungus, meaning it obtains nutrients by decomposing organic matter.

Toxicity[edit]

While Omphalotus japonicus is not considered deadly, it is not recommended for consumption due to its toxicity. Ingesting this mushroom can lead to gastrointestinal distress and other adverse effects.

Conservation[edit]

The conservation status of Omphalotus japonicus is currently not well-documented. However, as with many fungal species, habitat loss and environmental degradation pose potential threats to its populations.
