Venturia carpophila

Venturia carpophila is a plant pathogen that causes peach scab, a common disease affecting peach trees. This fungal pathogen primarily targets stone fruit trees, including peaches and nectarines. The disease manifests as dark lesions on the fruit, leaves, and twigs of infected trees, leading to reduced fruit quality and yield.

Symptoms[edit]

Infected peach trees exhibit symptoms such as small, circular lesions on the fruit surface that gradually enlarge and become darker over time. These lesions may also appear on the leaves and twigs of the tree. As the disease progresses, the affected fruit may become distorted and drop prematurely from the tree.

Disease Cycle[edit]

Venturia carpophila overwinters in infected plant debris, such as fallen leaves and fruit mummies. In the spring, the fungus produces spores that are spread by wind and rain to nearby trees. Upon landing on susceptible plant tissues, the spores germinate and infect the host, initiating the disease cycle.

Management[edit]

To manage peach scab caused by Venturia carpophila, cultural practices such as pruning infected branches and removing fallen leaves can help reduce the spread of the disease. Fungicides may also be applied preventatively to protect healthy plant tissues from infection. Additionally, planting resistant peach varieties can help minimize the impact of the disease in orchards.

Prevention[edit]

Preventing the introduction and spread of Venturia carpophila is crucial in maintaining the health of peach trees. Proper sanitation practices, such as removing and destroying infected plant material, can help reduce the pathogen's presence in the orchard. Regular monitoring for symptoms of peach scab can aid in early detection and management of the disease.
