Alcelaphine gammaherpesvirus 2

Alcelaphine gammaherpesvirus 2, also known as AlHV-2, is a species of virus in the genus Macavirus, subfamily Gammaherpesvirinae, family Herpesviridae. It is a gammaherpesvirus that primarily infects wildebeests (genus Connochaetes).

Virology[edit]

AlHV-2 is a double-stranded DNA virus with a linear genome. It is closely related to Alcelaphine gammaherpesvirus 1 (AlHV-1), which infects the same host species. The virus is transmitted through close contact between infected and susceptible animals.

Pathogenesis[edit]

In wildebeests, AlHV-2 can cause malignant catarrhal fever (MCF), a severe and often fatal disease characterized by fever, nasal discharge, and lymphoproliferative lesions. The virus primarily targets lymphoid tissues and endothelial cells, leading to systemic inflammation and organ damage.

Epidemiology[edit]

AlHV-2 is endemic in wildebeest populations in Africa. The virus is shed in bodily fluids of infected animals and can be transmitted to other susceptible species, such as cattle and deer, causing similar clinical signs of MCF. Control measures focus on preventing contact between infected and susceptible animals.

Diagnosis[edit]

Diagnosis of AlHV-2 infection is based on clinical signs, histopathology, and molecular techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect viral DNA in tissues or bodily fluids. Serological tests can also be used to detect antibodies against the virus.

Treatment and Prevention[edit]

There is no specific treatment for AlHV-2 infection in wildebeests. Prevention strategies include quarantine measures to prevent introduction of the virus into susceptible populations and vaccination programs in captive settings. Research is ongoing to develop effective vaccines for wild populations.
