Debby (polar bear)
Debby (1966 – November 17, 2008) was a female polar bear who was notable for her longevity. She was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's oldest polar bear, living to the age of 42, which is considered remarkable since polar bears in the wild typically live about 15 to 18 years. Debby was born in the Soviet Union and later resided at the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada for most of her life, where she became a beloved attraction.
Early Life and Arrival at Assiniboine Park Zoo[edit]
Debby was captured in the Arctic in 1966 and was brought to the Assiniboine Park Zoo when she was just a year old. Throughout her life in the zoo, Debby gave birth to six cubs, contributing to the genetic diversity of captive polar bears and aiding in the understanding of polar bear breeding and conservation.
Recognition and Legacy[edit]
Debby's longevity earned her a spot in the Guinness World Records, highlighting not only her age but also the care provided by the zoo staff over the years. Her life has been instrumental in raising awareness about polar bears and the impact of climate change on their natural habitat. Debby's death in 2008 was due to multiple organ failure, following a significant decline in her health. Her legacy continues to inspire conservation efforts and research on polar bear health and longevity.
Conservation Efforts[edit]
Debby's life at the Assiniboine Park Zoo was not just about being an exhibit; it also served as a platform for educating the public about the challenges polar bears face in the wild, including climate change and habitat loss. The zoo used her story to promote conservation efforts aimed at protecting polar bears and their habitat in the Arctic.
Conclusion[edit]
Debby's remarkable lifespan and her contributions to polar bear research and conservation efforts have left a lasting legacy. She remains a symbol of the challenges and hopes for polar bears worldwide, emphasizing the importance of conservation and research efforts to ensure the survival of this iconic species.
