Hershey Theatre

Hershey Theatre is a prominent performing arts venue located in Hershey, Pennsylvania, United States. It was commissioned by Milton S. Hershey, founder of the Hershey Chocolate Company, as part of his "Great Building Campaign" during the Great Depression to provide jobs and bring culture and entertainment to the town of Hershey. The theatre opened its doors on September 2, 1933, and has since become an iconic landmark in the region, known for its architectural beauty, historical significance, and diverse programming.
History[edit]
The idea for Hershey Theatre was conceived by Milton S. Hershey in the late 1920s. Hershey, who was deeply invested in the welfare of his company town, envisioned a cultural and entertainment hub that would enrich the lives of his employees and the local community. Construction began in 1929, under the architectural guidance of C. Emlen Urban, a prominent Lancaster architect who designed many of Hershey's landmark buildings. Despite the economic downturn caused by the Great Depression, Hershey insisted on continuing the construction, providing much-needed employment to the local workforce.
The theatre's design reflects a mix of styles, including Art Deco and Spanish Colonial Revival, with intricate interior decorations that feature mosaics, murals, and imported furnishings. The main auditorium is capable of seating up to 1,904 guests and is renowned for its excellent acoustics and the ornate organ that was installed at the time of its opening.
Programming[edit]
Hershey Theatre offers a wide range of cultural and entertainment events, including Broadway shows, concerts, ballets, and other performing arts. It serves as a vital part of the community, hosting educational programs, community events, and private functions. The theatre's diverse programming ensures that it appeals to a broad audience, from local residents to tourists visiting the Hershey area.
Architectural Features[edit]
One of the most striking features of Hershey Theatre is its lavish interior, which showcases the artistic and cultural influences of its time. The lobby is adorned with polished Italian lava rock and antique furnishings, leading to a grand staircase that exemplifies the elegance of the era. The auditorium itself is a masterpiece of design, with a painted ceiling that mimics the night sky, complete with twinkling stars and moving clouds, creating a magical atmosphere for attendees.
Impact and Legacy[edit]
Hershey Theatre has played a significant role in the cultural development of Hershey and the surrounding region. It stands as a testament to Milton S. Hershey's vision and commitment to community welfare, embodying the spirit of philanthropy and progress that characterized his approach to business and community building. Today, the theatre continues to be a cherished institution, attracting visitors from across the country and contributing to the cultural vibrancy of the area.
