Fourteen Holy Helpers are a group of saints venerated together in Roman Catholicism because their intercession is believed to be particularly effective, especially against various diseases. This devotion to the Fourteen Holy Helpers originated in the 14th century, largely in response to the Black Death in Europe. The saints are called upon as protectors against various illnesses and dangers.

History[edit]

The veneration of the group started in Rhine Valley, Germany, in the 14th century. It was a period marked by several calamities, including the Black Death, which led the faithful to seek the intercession of multiple saints for protection against different diseases and misfortunes. The cult of the Fourteen Holy Helpers gained popularity and spread throughout Europe, with churches and chapels dedicated to them, especially in Bavaria and Austria.

The Saints[edit]

The Fourteen Holy Helpers consist of a diverse group of saints, each associated with a particular condition or aspect of life:

  1. Saint George: Patron of protection against herpes and syphilis, and a helper for the protection of domestic animals.
  2. Saint Blaise: Invoked for protection against throat diseases.
  3. Saint Pantaleon: Patron for physicians and protection against tuberculosis.
  4. Saint Vitus: Sought for protection against epilepsy, chorea, and diseases of the nervous system.
  5. Saint Erasmus (Elmo): Patron of abdominal pain and childbirth.
  6. Saint Christopher: Invoked for protection against plagues and sudden death.
  7. Saint Giles: Patron for protection against plague, epilepsy, and mental illness.
  8. Saint Cyriacus: Invoked against temptation on the deathbed.
  9. Saint Achatius: Patron against headaches.
  10. Saint Dionysius: Invoked for protection against headaches.
  11. Saint Eustace: Patron for protection against family discord and accidents.
  12. Saint Catherine of Alexandria: Sought for protection against sudden death and diseases of the tongue.
  13. Saint Margaret of Antioch: Patron for childbirth and protection against back pain.
  14. Saint Barbara: Invoked for protection against fever and sudden death.

Veneration[edit]

The veneration of the Fourteen Holy Helpers was particularly significant during the Middle Ages. People would pray to them for protection against various diseases and to avert danger. The devotion to these saints was not only a spiritual practice but also a reflection of the societal need to find hope and protection in the face of widespread diseases and calamities.

Iconography[edit]

In art, the Fourteen Holy Helpers are often depicted together. Each saint is portrayed with symbols that represent their martyrdom, attributes, or the particular form of protection they offer. For example, Saint George is often depicted slaying a dragon, while Saint Christopher is shown carrying the Christ child across a river.

Modern Devotion[edit]

While the veneration of the Fourteen Holy Helpers has diminished since the Middle Ages, they are still remembered in various parts of the world, especially in Europe. Some churches and chapels dedicated to the Fourteen Holy Helpers continue to be sites of pilgrimage, where the faithful seek their intercession.
