Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD) is a term used to describe a variety of conditions that affect the bladder and urethra of cats. FLUTD is not a single disease, but rather a group of clinical symptoms that may have multiple causes. Symptoms of FLUTD include difficulty or pain when urinating, frequent urination, bloody urine, and urinating in inappropriate places. FLUTD can affect cats of any age, but is most commonly seen in middle-aged, overweight cats that have a sedentary lifestyle, use an indoor litter box exclusively, and have a dry food diet.

Causes[edit]

The causes of FLUTD are varied and can include urinary tract infections, urinary stones, urethral obstruction, bladder inflammation or infection, and other underlying health issues such as diabetes mellitus and hyperthyroidism. One of the most common causes of FLUTD is the formation of crystals or stones in the urinary tract, which can cause blockages and irritation.

Symptoms[edit]

Cats suffering from FLUTD typically exhibit signs of discomfort and pain when urinating. Symptoms may include:

  • Straining to urinate
  • Frequent attempts to urinate with little or no urine produced
  • Crying out while urinating
  • Licking the genital area excessively
  • Blood in the urine
  • Urinating outside the litter box

Diagnosis[edit]

Diagnosis of FLUTD involves a thorough history and physical examination by a veterinarian, along with diagnostic tests such as urinalysis, blood tests, ultrasound, and X-rays. These tests help to determine the underlying cause of the urinary symptoms, which is crucial for effective treatment.

Treatment[edit]

Treatment for FLUTD depends on the underlying cause. For cats with urinary stones, dietary changes, medication, or surgery may be recommended. In cases of urinary tract infection, antibiotics are typically prescribed. For cats with idiopathic cystitis (bladder inflammation without a known cause), treatment may include stress reduction, environmental enrichment, dietary changes, and medication to control pain and inflammation.

Prevention[edit]

Preventive measures for FLUTD include providing a diet that promotes a healthy urinary tract, encouraging water intake by providing fresh water or using water fountains, maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise, and reducing stress in the environment.
