Adansonia is a genus of deciduous trees known commonly as baobabs. They are found in Madagascar, mainland Africa, Australia, and Arabia. The genus is named after Michel Adanson, the French naturalist and explorer who described Adansonia digitata, the most widespread of the baobab species.

Description

Baobabs are among the most distinctive and iconic trees of the tropical regions they inhabit. They are renowned for their massive trunks, which can reach diameters of up to 10 meters (33 ft), and for their longevity; some specimens are believed to be over a thousand years old. The trees store large quantities of water in their trunks, which helps them survive the harsh drought conditions characteristic of their environments. Baobabs produce large, white flowers that hang down on long stalks and emit a strong, pleasant fragrance. The fruits of the baobab tree, known as "baobab fruit," are large, nutritious, and have a velvety shell.

Species

• Adansonia za, another species from Madagascar,
• Adansonia gregorii (also known as Adansonia gibbosa), the Australian baobab or boab,
• Adansonia kilima, a recently described species found in Africa and Arabia.

Ecology

Baobabs play a crucial role in their ecosystems. They provide food and shelter for a wide range of animals, including birds, monkeys, and insects. The flowers are pollinated primarily by fruit bats, but in some areas, by lemurs and other creatures.
