Roy Oliver Disney (June 24, 1893 – December 20, 1971) was an American businessman and co-founder of The Walt Disney Company. He was the older brother of Walt Disney, with whom he established Disney Brothers Studio, later renamed The Walt Disney Company. Roy O. Disney played a crucial role in the company's financial management and expansion, including the creation of Disneyland and the conception of Walt Disney World Resort.

Early Life[edit]

Roy O. Disney was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Elias Disney and Flora Call Disney. The Disney family moved to Marceline, Missouri, where Roy and his younger brother Walt developed a love for trains and the entertainment industry. After serving in the United States Navy during World War I, Roy moved to Los Angeles in 1923 to join Walt, who wished to pursue a career in animation.

Career[edit]

Roy and Walt Disney founded the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio in 1923, which later became The Walt Disney Company. Roy was instrumental in securing the deal with Margaret Winkler to distribute the Alice Comedies, which were the company's first successful series. He was known for his financial acumen, which complemented Walt's creative vision. Roy handled the business side of the studio, allowing Walt to focus on creative development.

In 1928, the studio created Mickey Mouse, leading to significant success for the company. Roy was responsible for securing bank loans and managing the finances to support the production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), the first full-length animated feature film.

Following Walt's death in 1966, Roy postponed his retirement to oversee the construction of Disney's most ambitious project yet, Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. He insisted that the resort be named in honor of his brother, officially naming it "Walt Disney World."

Death and Legacy[edit]

Roy O. Disney passed away on December 20, 1971, shortly after the opening of Walt Disney World. His leadership and financial management were pivotal in the establishment and success of The Walt Disney Company. Roy's dedication to his brother's vision ensured the company's survival and growth into a global entertainment powerhouse.

Roy was posthumously named a Disney Legend in 1998, an honor given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the Disney legacy.
