History[edit]

Microsoft 365 was launched in 2011 as Office 365, a successor to Microsoft's Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS). It was designed to meet the needs of organizations of all sizes—from small businesses to large enterprises. In April 2020, Microsoft rebranded Office 365 to Microsoft 365 to reflect its strategy of offering a single, complete productivity platform for its customers. This rebranding also coincided with the introduction of new features and plans that emphasized productivity tools, AI, and cloud-based services.

Features[edit]

Microsoft 365's key features include:

  • Collaboration and communication: Tools like Microsoft Teams allow users to collaborate in real-time, share files, and conduct virtual meetings.
  • AI and automation: Features like Ideas in Excel and PowerPoint, Cortana in Outlook, and AI-powered insights in Microsoft Analytics.
  • Security and compliance: Advanced security features such as threat protection, information protection, and identity and access management to help protect data and comply with legal regulations.
  • Cloud storage and mobility: With OneDrive, users can store files in the cloud and access them from anywhere, on any device.

Subscription Plans[edit]

Microsoft 365 offers various subscription plans, including:

  • For Home: Designed for families and households, offering access to Office applications and other services for personal use.
  • For Business: Tailored for businesses of all sizes, providing business-class email, online meetings, and other business services.
  • For Enterprise: Offers more advanced features for large organizations, including greater security, compliance, and analysis capabilities.
  • For Education: Special plans for educational institutions, providing students and teachers with access to Microsoft tools and services at no cost or at discounted rates.
