Flag of Bangladesh

Flag of Bangladesh
The Flag of Bangladesh consists of a red disc on a green field. The flag is based on a similar flag used during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. The red disc represents the sun rising over Bengal, and also the blood of those who died for the independence of Bangladesh. The green field stands for the lushness of the land of Bangladesh.
History[edit]
The original version of the flag was designed by Shib Narayan Das in 1970 for the student political group Swadheen Bangla Nucleus. The first flag was hoisted on 2 March 1971 at the University of Dhaka, but it included a yellow map of Bangladesh, which was later removed to create the current design. The flag was made official on 17 January 1972, shortly after Bangladesh's victory in the Liberation War.
Design[edit]
The flag's design is defined in the Bangladesh Flag Rules, 1972. The flag is rectangular with a length to width ratio of 10:6. The green field of the flag is dark bottle green to represent the greenery of Bangladesh. The red disc is offset slightly toward the hoist so that it appears centred when the flag is flying.
Symbolism[edit]
The green field symbolizes the vibrant natural wealth of Bangladesh, while the red disc is a symbol of the rising sun and the sacrifice made by the people of Bangladesh to obtain their independence. The flag is a strong symbol of national pride and unity for the Bangladeshi people.
Protocol[edit]
The flag is flown on government buildings, educational institutions, and other significant locations. It is raised at dawn and lowered at sunset. The flag must always be treated with respect and never allowed to touch the ground.
Variants[edit]
There are no official variants of the national flag for use by the military or other government organizations. However, the President and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh have their own standards based on the national flag.
