Amersham is a market town and civil parish within the Chiltern district in Buckinghamshire, England, in the Chiltern Hills, 27 miles northwest of London. It is part of the London commuter belt due to its proximity to London and connection to the London Underground.

History[edit]

Amersham's history dates back to the Anglo-Saxon period. It was first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Elmodesham. The town has evolved through the centuries, with its market charter first granted in 1200. In the Middle Ages, Amersham was known for its wool production. The town played a significant role during the English Reformation, with the Amersham Martyrs, a group of Lollards, being burned at the stake for their religious beliefs in the early 16th century.

Geography[edit]

Amersham is divided into two distinct areas: Amersham on the Hill, which is a more modern development, and Old Amersham, known for its historic buildings and broad High Street. The River Misbourne runs through the town, adding to its picturesque nature.

Economy[edit]

The economy of Amersham has historically been linked to agriculture and small-scale manufacturing. In recent years, it has become more service-oriented, with many residents commuting to London for work. The town is also home to the international company GE Healthcare, which has a significant presence in the area.

Transport[edit]

Amersham is well-connected by transport. It is served by Amersham station on the Metropolitan Line of the London Underground and also by Chiltern Railways, providing links to London Marylebone and Aylesbury. The town is close to the M25 motorway, making it accessible by road.

Culture and Community[edit]

Amersham boasts a vibrant community life with several annual events, including the Amersham Carnival and the Heritage Day. The town has a variety of sports clubs, community groups, and a local museum that highlights its rich history.

Education[edit]

The town is served by several schools, including Dr. Challoner's Grammar School, Dr. Challoner's High School, and Amersham School. These institutions offer a range of educational opportunities for children and young adults.

Notable People[edit]

Several notable individuals hail from Amersham, including Tim Rice, a renowned lyricist and author, and Roger Moore, the actor famous for his role as James Bond.
