Ragdoll is a cat breed known for its distinctive traits, including a large, muscular frame, semi-long hair, and a docile and gentle temperament. The breed is particularly noted for its tendency to go limp when picked up, much like a cloth doll, which is how it got its name.

History

The Ragdoll breed was created in California by Ann Baker in the early 1960s. The foundation cat, Josephine, was a white, long-haired domestic cat who, after being injured in a car accident, produced kittens with the breed's characteristic docile temperament and tendency to relax when held. Baker selectively bred these cats to emphasize these traits, along with a large size, striking blue eyes, and a silky coat.

Characteristics

Ragdolls are one of the largest domesticated cat breeds, with males weighing between 12 to 20 pounds (5.4 to 9.1 kg) and females slightly smaller. They have a sturdy body, medium-length legs, and a soft, rabbit-like fur that is less prone to matting. Their coat comes in various colors and patterns, including point, mitted, and bicolor.

Temperament

Ragdolls are known for their gentle and friendly nature. They are often described as dog-like in their loyalty, following their owners from room to room and greeting them at the door. Despite their large size, they are typically calm and easy to handle, making them excellent pets for families with children and other animals.

Health

Ragdolls are generally healthy, but, like all breeds, they can be prone to genetic and health issues. These may include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a form of heart disease, and kidney problems. Regular veterinary check-ups and a healthy diet are important for maintaining their health.

Care

The Ragdoll's semi-long coat requires regular grooming to prevent matting and reduce shedding. Weekly brushing is usually sufficient to keep their fur in good condition. Additionally, as indoor cats, they need a safe environment and plenty of mental and physical stimulation to stay healthy and happy.
